Taking the Favre Out of the Packers, But Not Out of Green Bay

The New York Times Reports on and Links to the SaveBrett.net Movement

In an article by Pat Borzi entitled "Taking the Favre Out of the Packers, But Not Out of Green Bay" The New York Times reflected on how deep the support for Brett Favre is in Green Bay despite his recent trade to the New York Jets.  Strangely the story was renamed "Packers Fans Split Over Favre's Departure" somewhere along the line but this headline does not match the content of the article itself.

In part, the article reads: "Many Packers fans remain angry. A web site, SaveBrett.net, collected more than 20,000 names in an online petition demanding the Packers restore Favre to the starter’s role. It featured this message from its founder, Tony Mars: 'We may not have succeeded at bringing Brett back to Green Bay as we had hoped but at least, if he had to leave, he leaves knowing that the Packers management does not represent the vast majority of fan opinion — the true soul of the Green Bay Packers.'”

Now Tony, I understand that you guys all really wanted Brett back but do you honestly believe that a vast majority of the Packer fans were with you? Come on, I think most of us realize (no matter which side we are on) that the public opinion is pretty split on this issue. Saying that Brett has a "vast majority" backing him is simply dishonest. Think what you want about the whole situation but be responsible when you are being asked about the opinion of hundreds of thousands of fans, especially when talking to such a major news outlet.

Hopefully Brett's trade to the Jets will put a lot of this foolishness behind us and the fans and the team can move on. Creating an atmosphere of divisiveness, such as this publicity stunt did, only inflated the already heightened feeling of disrespect between the parties, put unnecessary pressure on the players at camp, and set back the potential progress of the team, as a team.

As far as Brett, there is plenty of blame to go around on all sides, but if you cry wolf too many times ...

wait till the first game then you anti-Favre people will see how he was loved and what a joke TT is. he ran a HOF QB out of town. we had a chance for the superbowl this year. not now. thats the bottom line. TT and MM ego have cost us a REAL shot at the superbowl.china rodgers will not play 16 straight games!!! How many did Brett have in a row??? you favre hatters dont even have a clue what it takes to suit up and play ball. bunch of soft corp puzzy's

Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but I truly believe alot (not all, I'm not saying all) of the anti-Favre sentiment was, and continues to be, a product of the PR machine. They spent millions of dollars, I would imagine, and a hard-working skilled team of people feeding the media negative comments about Favre, and making the management look like brilliant decision makers, acting in the best interests of the Pack.
I even believe alot of the entries on this site have either been posted by the PR machine or are a product of people reading the poison they have spread.
That is the darkest part of this whole story. Football is about people. Without the people on the team you have nothing. This management team does not handle personnel very well. And that is the understatement of the year.
I am thrilled to see Favre playing again, and watching his Jets interview last night was sheer joy. He is a very special person. How can you not like a guy like that? I feel far more loyal to him than the team. That's just how I feel.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered Commentermdpackfan

Good morning, Ari. Nice job playin the media and destroying any chance, organized and otherwise, for the vast majority to effectively wrestle a positive outcome in this situation.

Just look at the three stooges now. Patting themselves on the back and especially Markey's comments about Teddie on how brilliant he was runniong Favre out of town! What a love-fest!

I started wathcing the PACK on black and white TV before we even heard of Bart. Thank God these three stooges weren't around then to run him out of town.

Regardless, Teddie is now joined at the hips with Aaron and we'll see if we get to the super bowl this year. My best guess is an 8 and 8 season as we suffer setbacks at the hands of the three stooges.

This brings me to my most difficult point to make...Bob Harlan. I once had a lot of repsect for him, asked him questions at the annual shareholders meetings, etc. His greatest achievement was helping to rebuild Lambeau. But I will never forgive him for bringing in these three stooges and especially extended someone's contract just before he leaves office! His last actions may very well prove to have ruined (or at least set back progress) the PACK's future for the next five to twenty years.

Fianlly, we need to get this "power of the shareholders" thing reviewed so that three stooges cannot accomplish such a disasterous action. This team is suppose to be owned by the people. If we have no power, then why even bother having shareholder meetings?

Tony, please consider some alternatives along this route so that we can get organized and on the agenda and make necessary board changes at the next shareholder meeting. Three stooges shall not act with ipunity!

Ok, Ari, have at me or send your "boys" in here to take issue with all this as you are doing. Isn't that interesting...the three stooges get to hire a national media guy to fight little ol' me.....

Notice: I have always used my name. I am not fearful of you and certainly not the three stooges.....

By the way, I have placed calls to Markey and board/Executive committee members and NONE were returned. You might want to check in on that, Ari. In fact, I even left one for you after I heard your voice on the general concern line...

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBill Borchardt

I agree with Bill!! Let's unite as shareholders to change the management. I truly believe that Ari Fleischer must be telling them to "Just keep repeating that you took the high road, treated Brett fairly," and the fans will eventually believe it. (You don't need to hire a spin doctor if you are doing the right thing).

We need to begin the movement that gets these men out of our front office! I don't think among McCarthy, Murphy, and Thompson that they even have ten years tenure here, do they?? The team, fans, and franchise as a whole. have been woefully disrespected. I don't hold Brett blameless, but I'm far more angry by the actions of the people who are running MY team. My team....the one I'm not sure I can root for anymore. :( They took that one pure joy away from me.

I'm on the train for effecting a change! My Packer plate expires and won't be renewed in October. My Packer merchandise-buying days are over. No game tickets for me. I am a stockholder and want to know how to get these clowns out of power.

Let's unite and make a difference. They've embarrassed our franchise and divided us as fans. SHAME ON THEM!!

Man, how self-absorbed are some of you (i.e. Mr. Borchardt). I'm fairly certain the Packers had a PR team before this season (remember a few years back when Favre had his pain-killer addiction, a PR team handled that rather well don't you agree?). The Packers PR team has done a pretty good job polishing up Favres image over the years with some of the issues he and his family have had/created. I'm also certain the Packers have very little intention of going after "little ol' you".

What if you told your bosses for a few years you didn't know if you wanted to work anymore and then one day you said, "I don't think I can devote 100% to this job so rather then do it half-assed, I'm going to retire". So your boss hires a replacement for you who's not quite the worker you are but he/she needs someone to do your job. After the replacement goes through some training, you decide you want your job back. Boss says o.k. come back, but a few days later you tell him/her you really think you should stay retired so boss goes ahead with his original plan with replacement. A few months later you get "the itch" (hope there's a cream for that) to work again. Well by this time your boss has stuck a few dollars into replacement and the co-workers have gotten used to him. He may not be a good as you but boss is just a bit tired of your Charlie Browning it and says "Thats enough". Do you go have your mom and wife whine? I would hope not.

As for all this talk of Favre giving up money from his contract so the Pack could sign other players; yeah he did restructure his contract but he didn't lose and money. His contract just became back-loaded with larger payouts in the final years.

One other thing - remember Rich Campbell? recall how he basically rotted on the bench waiting for his chance and when he finally got it it was too late? Maybe Rodgers should have just pulled a "Campbell"?

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterGo Raiders

Will you people now please get a life? Good luck to Aaron Rodgers; I hope he has a great season in every game except the two against the Vikings. As for the Jets and the good ol' country boy from Mississippi, I hope they lose every game. Will he retire in tears again at mid-season? ESPN will be able to simply replay last March's news conference. I see that good ol' Brett met the mayor of New York today. How quaint. Did he wear the same gray T-shirt and brown shorts he's been wearing ever since flying to Green Bay last Sunday? Deanna should stay home and wash a load of clothes. Enjoy the season, Packer Nation! We in Vikings country are thankful we don't have a stinkin' Packer as our quarterback. Skol!

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Parker

You guys are all clowns. Brett made up his mind he wanted to play for the Vikings this year and thought he could force Thompson to let him go. When Thompson did the RIGHT thing and said no, the spoiled little bastard said screw you I'm not playing for the Green and Gold. He never believed Thompson would hang tough and so now he's stuck in a bad team with a news media that will absolutely slaughter him when he blows up this year. Favre was a great Packer but this mess is all his doing and he will end up paying the price for it.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBH

Favre, Thompson and McCarthy all have parts in this debacle. To blame it all on Thompson and McCarthy is foolish. Favre has danced around retiring for years and the way he handled this was poor. Then again the way that Thompason and McCarthy handled it at the end was very poor.

I've been a Packer fan for all of my life, born and raised. Favre has been the quarterback of my team for half of my life. I'm pained to see him in another teams uniform, I honestly thought he would never wear anything than the Green and Gold in my life.

As for all of you dogging Rodgers. Remember, he didn't make the decision. He's just a pawn in this whole thing. I haven't seen enough of him playing yet to determine if he's any good or not. During the Dallas game he looked good, at family night he looked horrible. At this point he's what we've got and if we continue to be negative toward him, than the fans are the real losers. The worst kind of fans are the ones that boo their own team.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterContagion

Vast majority? I doubt that and don't kid yourselves further into believing that...50/50 at best (and that's being optimistic).

Come on, 20k signatures too? Doesn't even fill Lambeau to 1/3rd of its capacity.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterColin

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Either: a) glad to see him gone b) ready to move onto a new chapter in Packer history c) glad to see the 5 week media circus gone or d) all the above.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterColin

You know with the Packer press conference: Murphy, Ted and Mike did you notice how they thought they did nothing wrong? The relationship got damaged... How did that happen?

Did it ever occur to them that they might have done something wrong?

They really did drive Brett out. Because if they truly wanted him they could have made an apology. How is it possible for anyone to say yes I can commit to the Packers after you treated me this way when the ironic they is Brett has been the most committed Packer in Packer history.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMike

I am not going to argue with Ari's minions nor the fans of other teams who com in here to trash the place.

It is, however, important to note that Brett is the only really proven one among the four (three stooges and Brett) and the three stooges are very "short timers" in Green Bay (Two years, three at most). That FACT speaks volumes in its own right. As they said in an old cop show, "Just the facts, ma'am...Just the facts."

Relax, Ari, the three stooges are going to get out of this. You need not have your friends from other teams across the country come in here to trash this board.

You have never heard me say Favre is without any blame at all. The three stooges want their own destiny...now they have it. They have won this round.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBill Borchardt

I agree with Contation,

No one should ever boo their own team. Ever. and I can't believe people aren't going to games to watch the sport they love all because of one player that's gone. Goodness you people are desperate.

I am disappointed in seeing Favre leave but that won't stop me from supporting the Green and Gold. Heck I am going to the Packer-Cowboy matchup next month.

All I can say is, the people who are going to stop buying merchandise and not going to anymore games, you disgust me. I will never consider you losers true Packer fans. Ever.

I think the "Save Brett" movement needs to become an "Honor Brett" movement. We all need to embrace Aaron Rogers and OUR Green Bay Packers. Brett will always be a Packer, and he'll be the reason I'll cheer for 2 teams this season. While I won't support management, I support the guys playing the game who represent us. Aaron is our guy, and I hope he has as great as season as Brett has had so that the TEAM will still be the winningest for the next 16 years, too. Go Packers and Go Jet-Favre!

Pre-Ari there were almost NO anti-Favre visitors to this site.

I want everyone to be aware that the Packer Management has geared up their interns, among others, to visit and comment on blogs, chat rooms, etc. to help swing public opinion in their favor. Management has also brougt on additional PR representatives to mediate the words and ways that the press is portraying the 3 stooges and the irresponsible decision they have made. (And of course to lessen the impact that will certainly result financially...due to revenue losses on numerous levels)

So, make no mistake, it is no coincidence that this site has been inundated with Anti-Favre sentiment. (Hello Ari, Hello interns, Hello new PR company).

Fortunately most, if not all, Favre fans are intelligent enough to see through the bullshit.

August 8, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFootballLegend

FootballLegend:

It is interesting how the anti-favre sentiment has picked up, and you are right; all of us aren't as dumb as GB interns and PR people would like to believe. I see through their "intelligence" and smear-tactics. Ari Fleischer is a piece of garbage. I've always said this; I love three things: Football, Hockey, and Music. I never want POLITICS polluting any of the three. The idea that the Green Bay Public Relations ship is headed by a PR spinmeister is beyond despicable. Why isn't the state of Wisconsin RIOTING? I'm so disappointed in everyone up there.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!

That is just priceless! I mean, its not like people can just have opinions on something and disagree with what you guys say, oh wait, that is exactly what this is. People have opinions, get used to it. And don't ever talk about your groups great intelligence after proposing such a utterly stupid theory. I have a conspiracy theory. FAVRE NEVER WANTED TO PLAY IN GREEN BAY! How's that for a conspiracy theory.

I like Favre just as much as the next guy, but I don't like players holding my team hostage either.

August 9, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterRay

I respect Brett for what he has done for the Packers over his career, but I'm a Packer fan first. It's hard to accept inevitable change and let go of an icon, but change happens.

Favre is gone, but the team continues on. Get behind the team and give them a chance. Management's decision will become clearly good or poor soon enough. But supporting the team is bigger than one QB or one GM. They all come and go.

Question: How do all the supporters justify their Favre devotion when Brett was clearly ready to jump from Green Bay to the Vikings, as his next choice. Why honor someone who would turn on his loyal fanbase by deliberately choosing to go to a bitter rival if given the chance? Why honor someone who would place more importance on petty revenge than on the long-time fans who supported him?

August 9, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

They say love is blind and the Favre lovers are blind. The Packers cannot jump at Favre's beck and call and continue to deal with his indecision. I was sad to see Favre go but it was time to move on.

MM was the reason for Favre's rebirth last year.

TT was the reason we had the players to go to the Championship game.

Their results hardly speak of ineptitude!

The only stooges I see are those in the fire TT and MM crowd where it appears the love of Favre blinds them.

Seeing the picture of Brett's smiling face while talking to Bubba Franks at the Jets preseason game says it all. He looks Happy! I am so grateful to the Jets organization & the State of New York for Welcoming him & his Family with Open ARMS! Also to the all the Sports professionals who have also been so welcoming & supportive. Eli Manning is just a classy human being. His comments on ESPN show us how much Brett is respected. I have been a Packer fan since birth, who hasn't? This legacy we were born into has always stood for Family, the love of the Team & Players and Love of the Game. What was done to Brett & his Family maybe "sold" to the public as good for the team, the city and the state, but that is not how it is viewed in reality. Shame on the Shareholders, the President, the GM and the Coach for not stopping this runaway "Train". It is & always will be known as the "darkest day for the Green Bay Packers". Such a travesty. I will forever be a Packer fan, and will only return when this current situation has been rectified. Change is hard, but hey, life is all about change, so I will learn all I can about the Jets, I have already packed my Packer stuff away until current management is gone, spent $300 on new stuff and just spent $300 on direct tv so I can see every Jets game. GO JETS! GO BRETT!

August 9, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKim

I am not a Brett Favre hater. I am thankful to have been able to watch him play for all these years and am sad to see him go. However, I am one of many Packer fans I know that felt, long before his retirement, that Brett probably wouldn't bring us another championship. Yeah we got to the NFC Championship game, but don't let the score fool you. The Giants had us beat several times that game and it never should have gotten to overtime. The first comment out of my brother's mouth after that game was over was, "Brett has to retire. He'll never duplicate the season he had this year again." Many true Packer fans shared that same concern.

I also was getting very irritated with Brett's mouth over the past few years where, somewhere along the line, he decided that his tenure as a Packer had earned him the right to make management decisions. Having his buddy Steve as the coach would have meant no accountability, 45 throws a game with 5 Int's.

For all you people who think this should be laid on Rodger's shoulders, I wonder if you'll remember Brett's first full season as a Packer starter when you make your shallow, emotional observations of Aaron. Remember 19 touchdowns and 24 int's? How about 2005 with 20 touchdowns and 29 ints?

Although I have deep concerns that it will not work out so well for him, I wish Brett the best. I also believe that every good organization needs solid leadership that's willing to lead and not just follow the whims of shareholders or employees. No good GM or Head Coach would take the job if they were told they had to be a puppet for every plumber and beer truck driver in the state of Wisconsin. (No offense to plumbers to beer delivery engineers. Keep those toilets a flushin' and the beer a flowin')

As for you people who seriously believe these opinions are Ari's doing, watch your back and don't turn the lights out. He's right behind you. The reason I didn't start posting here until it heated up is because I didn't want to waste my time on a blog that could only garner about two responses a day. It took a while for some of the potty mouthed blowhards to push me to the point of believing this blog needed an intelligent response.

August 9, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBForm

BTW, I will continue to watch Favre every chance I get and will root for him. But just because I love what he's meant for the Packers and wish him well doesn't mean I believe they should just let him stick around forever on one year commitments. They have a young team that they are building to make several championship runs and shouldn't pin everything on one year. It's time to find someone that they won't fear will retire next year. If that doesn't turn out to be Aaron Rodgers, then they need to try another QB they feel will give them several championship runs.

Oh, and how dare you say that I am the one "anything that I am told". Most of the Favre fans on here would defend Favre no matter what he did and worship him to no end.
